GRANITE DYKES INTRUDING SLATE
Thin sheets of light colored GRANITE have invaded the dark colored SLATE. Sheets like this are called DYKES. The dykes came from a nearby lager mass of granite called a PLUTON. The heat and pressure around the pluton caused cracks and fissures to form in the surrounding rock. Hot, molten granite was injected under pressure into the fissures forming what we now call dykes.
