FOLDED ROCK
Layers of once horizontal rock have been sharply FOLDED by earth
movements. The light gray layers or beds (also called STRATA)
are made of a wide range of SAND type grains less than 1mm in
diameter but more than 0.01mm. The dark beds are made of much
finer CLAY particles. Compression within the earth's crust has
turned these into SANDSTONES and MUDROCKS respectively. These
particular rocks are part of what is called a TURBIDITE DEPOSIT.
Images L45 & L46 give more detailed descriptions of these features. These strata
have been folded by COMPRESSIVE FORCES within the earth. This
structure is a "lying down" fold. The hammer gives you some idea
of the scale.
