RIVER CANYON CUT THROUGH HORIZONTAL LAYERS OF ROCK
Upstream of the much-feared Cataract Canyon in the Canyonlands
of Utah, the Colorado River flows on its long journey to the Pacific
Ocean. The river has eroded a CANYON over 1000' (300m) into the
Colorado Plateau. Layers of resistant and less resistant rocks
and SCREE accumulations of weathered debris can be clearly seen.
The water is clouded by SEDIMENT. The sediment on either side
of the river is a different colour. Look at image L5 for the reason why.
