BALANCING ROCK
Strange features like these are common in the "red-rock" SANDSTONE
country of the American West. A combination of arid climate, sparse
vegetation and varying rock types leads to the formation of fascinating
features and landscapes. The balancing rock and its solitary neighbor
are part of the same rock layer that forms the cliffs to the left
in the background. WEATHERING and EROSION by rain, frost, wind
and intense heat from the sun have worn away the rocks that once
joined all these formations. These rocks are remnant or RESIDUAL
landforms etched into the landscape by the passage of time and
will soon be destroyed.
The horizontal lines that you may see are the layers of slightly
different rock while the vertical lines are fissures and cracks
formed by earth movements that have effected this area around
Moab, Utah in the USA.
