VOLCANIC NECK & DYKE
The rock formation in the distance is the NECK an old VOLCANO.
All the ASH and LAVA that would have surrounded the neck has been
eroded away over thousands of years. The wall of rock that joins
the neck called a DYKE. The dyke is made of cooled lava that had
filled a FISSURE in the rocks around the old volcano. The ancient
Indian people of the region called the rock "Tse'Bit'a'i'" which
means "The Winged Rock". Can you see why? It is also called SHIP
ROCK. It rises almost 2200' / 670m above the PLAIN and can be
seen from distant places.
