FROST DAMAGE
Water expands when it freezes. So if a pocket of water is trapped
beneath the surface of a road, for example, it can cause damage
by freezing and thawing, freezing and thawing, freezing and thawing
over and over again. It can damage roads by creating small potholes
that quickly grow larger with the passage of motor vehicles. The
same WEATHERING PROCESS known as FREEZE-THAW, takes place in cracks
and air pockets in rocks.
