EVAPORITE TUFA, MONO LAKE. CALIFORNIA, USA
These ice-berg like features in and around California's Mono Lake are TUFA deposits. CARBONATE rich waters flow into the lake from the surrounding mountains. The carbonate is PRECIPITATED from SOLUTION in the warm waters of the lake to form these TUFA deposits. The process is complicated by the movement of VOLCANIC GASES through the lake waters.
MONO LAKE has been the focus of a major ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE since water was first diverted from the lake by the L.A. AQUADUCT (carrying water to Los Angeles) some 30 years ago. The lake level dropped drastically, many life forms died and ENVIRONMENTALISTS took up the cause. Now, as after a recent court judgment, more water is allowed to flow into the lake and the level is rising again.
