PULP MILL ON A MAJOR RIVER.
The river supplies the source of WATER and COOLING and, in years
gone by would have transported EFFLUENT away from the mill. In
this plant trees are pulped to make paper products.
The site on the St. John River, at St John, New Brunswick, Canada
is remarkable for its REVERSING FALLS. It lies near the coast
of the BAY of FUNDI where the funnel-like shape of the ocean basin
offshore caused TIDAL RANGES to be among the highest in the world.
When the tide is out, the river at this point surges seawards
over a series of RAPIDS. When the tide flows inland, a river of
sea water rises and flows over the RAPIDS - hence the REVERSING
FALLS. During the course of a day the water will flow in both
directions twice.
