EVAPORITE DEPOSITS
Between the SAND DUNES in this desert area of Death Valley National
Park, California, USA, are depressions where occasional heavy
rainfall accumulates. Water does not stay on the surface long
in this hot, arid dessert. Soon EVAPORATED by the searing heat,
all that remains of a little lake may be a thin crust of CRYSTALLINE
SALT that has PRECIPITATED out of the evaporated solution. These
are known as EVAPORITE DEPOSITS. The irregular pattern of cracks
show how the salt shrank as it dried.
